The most popular Christmas albums on iTunes are all in the top five for a third straight year, according to Nielsen Music data analyzed by CBS News.
But the top-ranked albums are not necessarily the best ones.
Some of the albums have long been favorites of critics and collectors who can’t stand albums with titles that contain obscenities, obscenity-laden songs and language that is too violent, sexual or otherwise offensive.
And for many, those are the top Christmas albums, according.
The most recent chart, released Tuesday, includes six albums that debuted in the No. 1 slot last year.
They include “Merry Christmas,” “My Life” and “Christmas” from the band Pink Floyd, along with the rocker Jimi Hendrix’s “Let It Snow.”
“Merry and Happy” from The Beatles’ “Let it Snow” is a No. 2 on the charts, and “The Great Gatsby” from Woody Allen’s “Silver Linings Playbook” is the No-1 album of the year.
The top 10 most popular albums of 2018 are as follows: “The Greatest Christmas Albums of All Time” by Neil Young, “The New Years Eve Holiday Album” by Pink Floyd and the rock group The Rolling Stones, “Christmas In Paris” by Elvis Costello and The Beatles, “Ladies Night at the Roxbury” by The Beach Boys, “Holly Jolly Christmas” by John Lennon, “Tender Christmas” from Queen’s “Candy for My Valentine” and the “Christmas Album” from Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
The most popular songs from 2018 include “Hallelujah” by Stevie Wonder, “We Are the World” by Adele and “God Save the Queen” by Bon Jovi.
In the top 10 for the last three years, there are six albums from artists who were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They are The Beatles (4), Rolling Stones (3), The Beatles Junior (2), Queen (1) and The Beachboys (1).
The Beatles Junior, a record of the group’s first year as a group, was a No-2 on the chart in 2016.
The Beatles are also on the cover of the best-selling CD ever, with a vinyl edition of the LP sold out in the weeks leading up to its release.
The band’s album is a classic in its own right.
It is the first to feature the Beatles’ iconic song “A Day in the Life” in its entirety.
It has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.
The album was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2018 and a Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2017.
