Lightning beat Red Wings 3-2 for 3rd straight win September 26, 2021 September 26, 2021 admin

The Detroit Red Wings beat the Chicago Blackhawks for their third straight win on Saturday night, securing their second straight road victory as they host the Ottawa Senators.

It was a game that the Wings played without forward Gustav Nyquist, who left the game with an upper-body injury during the first period.

Nyquist returned for the second period and scored the winner.

The Wings (12-6-2) have won four straight at Joe Louis Arena and their winning streak has been snapped for the third time in four games.

“It’s not easy to win games like this, especially against a good team like Chicago,” Nyquist said.

“We’ve got to keep going and keep playing.

The guys were great tonight.

They played well.

I just have to go out there and play the game I’ve got in my hands and I think that’s where we’re at.”

The Wings took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but Jonathan Ericsson scored on a power play to make it 3-0.

Nystrom was credited with the goal after he had a shot blocked.

The goal was his first since Nov. 3 at New Jersey.

The Blackhawks (9-8-1) shot just 8 of 17 and were outshot 31-24 in the third.

They were outscored 19-7 in the final period and outshot 28-8 in the second.

Chicago’s Corey Crawford scored two goals for the Blackhawks.

He finished with nine shots.

Goalie Cam Ward allowed two goals on 29 shots in his first start of the season.

“Cam Ward gave us some great chances tonight, he was a big reason we won,” said Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith, who made 14 saves.

“His confidence was there tonight.

We didn’t play good defense tonight and it cost us tonight.”

After being outshot 15-6 in the first, the Red Wings were outshooting the Blackhawks 31-28 in the game.

Nyquist stopped 24 of 26 shots for his third shutout of the year.

“I think tonight was just a reminder to the team and to each other that we’re not going to get discouraged by the numbers and the goals and we’re going to keep working hard,” said Nyquist.

“Tonight, I was just trying to find a way to make plays, and we got some opportunities and did a great job of making those plays.

We just need to keep grinding and keep pushing.”

The Blackhawks will get another chance to win on Friday when they host Detroit again.

Chicago, who are 6-7-1 since losing their final two games, will return home for a five-game road trip.
